Organist Gets Gift As Church Closes

58 years a church organist, Mr. Binney tries out his new chair, while Mr. Hainsworth looks on.
After 65 years Manchester Road Methodist Church closed its doors for the last time on Sunday morning, the 20th September 1970. At the final service the Rev. John Hainsworth told a congregation of about 60 that he was looking forward to taking over as minister at Parkside, the old Myrtle Bank Methodist Church, next week. Members of Westhill Methodist Church will also attend the Myrtle Bank church when their own church has been sold.

On Sunday morning, Mr. Herbert Binney, who has been organist at Manchester Road for 27 years, played for the last time. He was presented with a wing fireside chair during the service. For Mr. Binney, of 65 Rosegrove Lane Burnley, the service climaxed 58 years of regular Sunday organ playing in Burnley. He played at Rosegrove Methodist Church for 29 years and was choirmaster for about three years at Cornholme Church.
Later, at his home, Mr. Binney said: "It has been a very enjoyable life playing the organ for so many years. I will continue to play the piano at home and will conduct the WRVS choir, as I have done for six years.
