Believe it or not these are some of the teachers and pupils from Gawthorpe High School before the kick-off of their sponsored game.
The "Georgina Bests", "Norma Hunters" and "Rita Clemences" from Gawthorpe High School's fourth form took on the might of the teachers in a sponsored football match and LOST. But the girls' massive 8-4 defeat is easily swallowed as it was all in a good cause, to raise funds for a mini-bus for Brun-Lea School. The match was just one of their fund raising activities which have also included a disco, a competition and a special day today when for the price of ten pence students can turn up out of school uniform. Although the formidable form lost out in the match their efforts won the praise of headmaster Mr. T. Nowell, who commended their initiative. "They have realised that these children are less fortunate than themselves and are prepared to do something about it, without any persuasion from their teachers." Of course the teachers can't be left out altogether as they provided the opposition for today's match and have helped organise the disco. Mrs. Joyce Jones, headmistress of Brun-Lea Special School said: "I feel very touched at the way everyone has helped. I think that the efforts of everyone in Burnley has been over-whelming. We originally aimed for £5,000 and at the moment we are at just about £4,000. The money from Gawthorpe will be very useful."
