Reporter Walton puts his back into pulling a soggy-looking Michael Lancaster (St. Andrew's Venture Scout Unit, Burnley) out of the stream inside Dow Cave. Andrew Brown, also of St. Andrew's waits to join them on the ledge.
From a longer article by John Walton:
From Friday evening, the 18th September 1970, to Sunday afternoon 13 businessmen and reporters joined 36 Venture Scouts from the Burnley area for an adventure weekend at Whitehough Camp School Barley, working very much as a team climbing, potholing, sailing, fell walking and orienteering. It was the culmination of a discussion several months earlier between Mr. Bob Childes, District Commissioner for Nelson Scouts, and Mr. Paul Jefferis, chairman of the Leadership Development committee of Manchester Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Camp Chief Mr. Peter Smith of the 10th Nelson Venture Scout Unit briefed the team for Saturday's events at 6 a.m. The sailing group set out to Dunnockshaw Reservoir, and the climbers to rocks above Widdup Reservoir. Reporter John Walton choose potholing at Dow Cave, a 1,000ft tunnel in the hills above Kettlewell, with a party of 11; seven Venture Scouts including leader Roger Bucknell and Land Rover driver Miss. Pauline Worger of the Camp School staff, and 2 junior Chamber members. The following morning half the contingent went climbing, and the others set out for a 10-mile trek up Pendle Hill, down to Newchurch.
The weekend officially ended with a reception for the Mayors of Burnley, Nelson and Colne where organisers were thanked and plans made to organise a similar event the following year.
