West and Eric Probert watch as Thomas tries a shot at the Dell.
From a match report by Keith McNee:
The spirited young men of Turf Moor played the slicker football in the general sense than disjointed Southampton but failed through lack of punch, some bad luck and a sad defence boob just before the interval. The two most important moments of the match came right at the end of the first half. The first was after 37 minutes when Nulty, advancing from his defensive position headed superbly and absolutely cleanly into the net from a corner by Thomas on the right. It was a good goal but welsh referee, Iorwerth Jones, gave a free-kick to Southampton, ruling that another Burnley player had pushed a home defender. Seven minutes later Channon scored for Southampton. Channon scored Southampton's second goal in the last half minutes of play.
Between the goals and in the first 30 minutes it was Burnley who impressed as the likelier combination but the nearest they came to a goal after Nulty's disallowed goal was when Thomas banged the ball against 'keeper Martin when a cool chip would have been much more effective.
