Standard Bearers during the two-minutes silence at the afternoon service at the town centre memorial.
Hundreds of Burnley people heard "The Last Post" sound thinly through the cold November air at the annual Remembrance Day Service on Sunday 8th November 1970. The ranks of the veterans at Towneley are thinner in 1970. But as the old guard grows fewer the torch of remembrance is passing into younger hands. For the first time at Towneley there was a new contingent of the local Girls' Venture Corps, outstanding in smart blue uniforms and Glengarry style caps - who were invited to make the Poppy Fund collections. They were led by their commanding officer, Miss Doreen France and were introduced by a veteran of an older corps, Mr. W. H. Barnes, 86-year-old chairman of the Burnley branch of the British Legion. With the weather more clement than last year there were more members of the public at Towneley for the service; and the uniformed ranks were augmented by the contingent from the 202 (DLOY) Field Squadron Royal Engineers, TAVR, who alternate attendance each year at Preston, Clifton, and Burnley. The service was conducted by Rev. E. Sainsbury, superintendent minister of Burnley Methodist circuit. "The Last Post" and "Reveille" were sounded by buglers of the Army Cadet Corps. Accompaniment to the hymns was provided by the band of the Burnley Citadel Salvation Army. The parade proceeded to the memorial where wreaths were laid and then to the front of the hall, where the Mayor took the salute.
In the afternoon rain resulted in a smaller attendance of ex-Servicemen at the service at the Memorial and Garden of Remembrance in Grimshaw Street. It was conducted by the Vicar of Holy Trinity Church, the Rev. T. Wilson and Binyan's lines were read by Mr. Barnes, the oldest ex-Serviceman present. The parade assembled in Bankfield Street, marched through the new Market Square and via Parker Lane. The guard of honour was formed by the Sea Cadets whose buglers played "The Last Post" and "Reveille." Officer commanding the parade was Lt. Cdr Bates.
