Parents of Burnley High School girls were slammed by headmistress Mrs. Winifred Dearing at the school's prizegiving for letting their daughters' smoke openly, play truant, and waste chances. Mrs. Dearing said that although the majority of girls had a good attitude to work, a growing number made things difficult for their contemporaries. Mrs. Dearing congratulated the sixth form on producing good academic results, and welcomed last year's leavers who had returned to the school from their new jobs or studies to be present for the occasion.
Mrs. Dearing welcomed the Rev. Raymond Short, executive producer of BBC's "Songs of Praise" programme and recalled the association formed during the past year between the BBC and the school. The Mayor and Mayoress of Burnley, Ald. E. J. Willis and Mrs. Willis also attended.
