Firemen examine the flagpole before removing it.
A 20-foot long flagpole hung precariously over the pavement in Colne Road Brierfield at the weekend, until it was removed by firemen. The flagpole, at the old Conservative Club, bent in the middle and began to come down on Saturday night, 5th December 1970. Police informed Mr Stanley Pratt, the council surveyor, who rang the fire brigade to ask "Can I borrow a turn-table ladder?" Mr Pratt explained that the council's tower wagon was not tall enough to reach the pole. The firemen obliged and the danger was quickly removed.
