A 500 strong audience stamped and cheered Rt Hon Enoch Powell onto the platform at Padiham Town Hall. There, by the sheer force of his eloquence and the magnetism of his personality, he kept captive an invited audience for a 90 minute lecture on economics in general and nationalisation in particular. Outside Padiham's public buildings the remnants of the earlier Lancashire Integration Society meeting wilted after the 3 mile walk from Burnley. Banners and spirits sagged visibly as it became clear that the object of their presence Mr Enoch Powell himself was already inside the Town Hall entering at the rear of the building. Maximum security precautions had been taken well in advance and non-ticket holders attendance was very remote. Mr Powell-a dynamic and energetic looking figure-took pride of place at the Union Jack draped platform table with Sir Frank Pearson MP for the Clitheroe Division Young Conservatives. All of the approval went up at his appearance and one woman carried away by excitement, jumped up, clapped her hands and shouted 'Good old Enoch'. Enoch smiled and bowed an acknowledgement to her as the audience shouted their approval.
