It was a special occasion for two members of Brierfield St John Ambulance Brigade at the Christmas dinner and dance at the Sparrow Hawk Hotel, Burnley. Mr J. Devanney, of Commercial Street, Brierfield and Mr R. Ormerod of Walter Street, Brierfield, both received cuff-links from the Brierfield St John vice-president, Mr W. J. Morton, and letters of congratulations from Brierfield Urban District Council. They have both become Serving Brothers of the Order of St John. The Urban District Council chairman, Councillor Mrs M. Arnold, gave the men their congratulatory letters. About 45 members attended the function. Before the meal a few moments' silence was held for members who have died in the past 12 months, among them the president, Mr J. Binney.
