A very brief overview of a 4 page Advertisement Feature to mark the 55th anniversary of the Burnley Chamber of Trade. The article includes statements from Mr. W. D. M Harrison, President of Burnley and District Chamber of Trade; Mr T. R. Jenkins, Chairman of the North-West Area Council of the National Chamber of Trade and Mr. Thomas C. Hillier, President of the National Chamber. It describes the new look about the Burnley branch whose theme is of fresh enterprise for the 70's to carry the Chamber to new spheres of success for both large and small businesses. A CV of the main officers of the board is given.
The article gives an historical overview of trade in the town from the earliest known trader Anne Nowell who offered beer to travellers from what became the Sparrow Hawk Hotel, through the formation in 1916 of the first association and its development to the present day (1971). About 250 of the town's traders are linked, either by direct membership or affiliation with the Burnley and District Chamber of Trade but that figure should be four times as great - and it is the earnest intention of the Chamber's present committee to bridge the gap.
