There was a special atmosphere at Sandygate Youth Club on Wednesday evening for, in addition to the annual presentation of awards, the club was also celebrating its 25th anniversary and a number of special guests were present. They included the first leader of the club Mr. C. F. L. Wall, long serving former leader Mr. Alan Billington who presented the awards and Miss O. Lamb and Mr. Jack Smith former assistant leaders. Mr. Norman Powell, former youth organiser, presided.
Club leader Mr. E. Starkie reported on the year's work and thanked both staff and members for their help and support. The most surprised member present was 18 year old Barry Bannister who was awarded the Mac Thornber memorial trophy for outstanding services to the club. A new cup to find the Sandygate Youth Club personality girl was held for the first time with Messrs. Billington, Wall, Powell and Miss. O. Lamb forming the panel of judges. Noreen Hargreaves (17) was awarded the title with Jane Carter and Pat Hunt in 2nd and 3rd places. Prize winners of various sporting activities are given in the article.
A special display of photographs showing Sandygate Youth Club activities over a long number of years created a great deal of interest and not a little amusement.
