Church leaders and civic dignitaries gathered on the steps of Saint Leonards church before the townspeople of Padiham at the climax of the towns Whit Walks on Sunday. Some 10 churches and 2500 workers had taken two hours to parade through the town in a Whit spectacle that is fast becoming unique. The ecumenical event, watched by 5000 people ended with readings, prayers and a blessing.
Only a light police presence was needed and both walkers and motorists drew praise.
