Martin Dobson challenges for a centre by Mick Docherty at Nottingham.

From a report by Keith McNee: This grim result could be the beginning of the end of Burney's First Division days. The reason for the score is a menacing man named Moore, who poached the only goal at an overcast City ground after half an hour of evenly balanced play in increasingly difficult conditions of wind, rain and mud fought hard but not with all that much skill. Up to this point, Burnley had certainly held their own with Barron saving a 15-yarder from Docherty and a fierce swerving longer range shot from Kindon. But once Forest got their noses in front, Coates, Thomas and company lost a lot of their earlier rhythm and drive. All the Burnley stars were in defence, with Walters taking top honours followed by Angus, Waldron and Bellamy.

Nottingham Forest: Barron, Hindley, Winfield, Chapman, O'Kane, Jackson, Lyons, Fraser, Martin, Cormack, Moore. Sub: Richardson (replaced Lyons after 86 minutes).
Burnley: Walters, Angus, Latcham, Docherty, Waldron, Dobson, Thomas, Coates, Bellamy, Probert, Kindon. Sub: Nulty (not called on).
Referee: C. H. Nicholls (Plymouth).
Attendance: 20,854
