Yesterday, 27th May 1971, the public of Burnley had a chance to see the beautiful floral display which is staged annually by the corporation Parks department in honour of the new Mayor. The magnificent display, which contains 15 different varieties of plants and flowers, spread from the ground floor at the town hall and up the red-carpeted staircase to the landing outside the mayor's parlour. There the centrepiece is a goldfish pool complete with fountain. The mass of colour includes rhododendrons, foxgloves, marigolds and schizanthus (or poor man's orchids), and the display was designed by Parks department staff. The flowers have been nursed to full bloom by the department from seeds and cuttings to be ready for the new mayor's installation this week and, after the public display finished last night, they are to be returned to the department's greenhouses and flower-beds.
