Burnley's impressive Victorian Town Hall and the modern architectural lines of the Keirby Hotel. Are these beautiful buildings, not according to the town's teenagers.
In fact they are included among the top ten town centre monstrosities selected by more than 200 young people in a competition organised by the newly formed Junior branch of the Civic Trust. The organisation simply wanted to know what young people thought were the ugliest buildings so they sent out entrance forms for the top ten monstrosities competition. There were 250 entries and the top ten in order of placing in the competition are:
Corporation Destructor Works, The Palace Theatre, Centenary Statue, Aenon Baptist Chuch, The Town Hall, Massey's Brewery, The Culvert, The former UCP Tripe Works, The Keirby Hotel, The old Fire Station.
The list is certain to raise a few eyebrows and "the beauty lies in the eyes of the be-holder" is certain to come into the argument.
The winner of the competition whose list is nearer to the general opinion is High School girl Sandra Morris of 64 Thursby Road Burnley. Her list also includes The Education Offices, The School Clinic and the Fountain. Says Sandra "Some of the buildings in the town centre are horrible but I realise a lot is being done to make them look better". She says her list (which omits the Keirby Hotel and the Town Hall) is compiled of what she believes are real eyesores.
