Towneley From The Roof Top

A view towards the War memorial.
Visitors to Towneley Hall will, during the next month, have the first opportunity for over three years to get a "bird's eye view" of the park and countryside. For the next three Saturdays, starting 15 August 1970, the staff of Towneley Hall, helped by volunteers from the Towneley Hall Society, will be in attendance from 2pm to 4.30pm, to escort parties to the roof of the hall.
Over the battlements there is a magnificent view of the lawn and flower beds on the side of the hall where the fountain stands; as well as a rare vista over the lake and along the avenue of trees towards Brunshaw. The curator, Mr. H. C. Thornton told a Burnley Express reporter that visits to the roof had been banned because of danger of vibrations damaging the ceiling of the main entrance hall - over which there is a catwalk which gives access to the roof. For a time even the staff were prohibited from entering, until repairs and renovations to the ceiling were completed. "Now it is safe again, and we thought it would be a good idea to give people a chance to enjoy the view", said Mr. Thornton.
