A few of the 91 who completed the Lowerhouse CC walk organised by the players last Sunday to augment club funds. Brian Higgin sets the pace in the rain for this group of enthusiasts.
The Lowerhouse CC walk was a huge success last Sunday, 16th November 1975, despite the rain, the route and the leg pulling - perhaps in some measure because of the latter. Over 90 took part in what was described as the best ever co-operative effort at the West End.
Vice-chairman Jack Hayes walked, so did Duncan Hall who was believed to be fighting off a flu attack on the Saturday night but was determined not to let the side down. Members of the ladies' committee took part, so did Graham Bushell, of Burnley, an entry which pleased his rivals of Liverpool Road. Committeeman Bill Fielding manned a checkpoint and at Hapton Jean Wrigley provided the soaked competitors with hot soup. Chairman of the players' committee Trevor Boardwell said that the walk had been a great team spirit and money raising success. "I know two people who have a guaranteed £100 to hand over and others have sheets of sponsors. It was a brave effort by some, particularly the ladies, for from the stepping stones at Ightenhill up through the fields to Higham it poured down in torrents. Many were glad to reach the traffic lights from Hapton and be almost in sight of the cricket club. There the atmosphere was terrific with everyone realising they had completed their self-appointed task."
Potato pie was donated by Mr Jim Tattersall, an ardent Lowerhouse supporter. The walk proceeds will be received at a sherry morning at the cricket club on Sunday, November 30th.
