Phil’s Glory Day In 70’s Farewell

Shooting Star... Phil Cavener slams his first goal in league football to put Burnley ahead 1-0 at Meadow Lane. Peter Higgs reports. Burnley end the Seventies on a high with their first away win of the1979/80 season beating Notts County 3-2 at Meadow Lane. The occasion is sure to be remembered as "Phil Cavener's Match". The 18 year-old from South Shields scored twice and emerged as a potential star of the future and troubled the Notts County defence throughout with his pace and skill. Martin Dobson continued his run of good form with a commanding performance which made the £100,000 fee for the former Evertonian seem like transfer robbery. Billy Hamilton is also settling down and proving quite a valuable investment. Burnley’s 4-4-2 system makes them a very hard team to play against. Notts County’s more numerous attacks got them nowhere while Burnley scored twice with two cool counter-attacks. In the 18th minute County’s defence backed off as Cavener went at them, beating two men and slammed a 15-yard shot into the far corner of the net. Six minutes later Burnley were two ahead, as Dobson beat two men in his own half and passed to Hamilton with Big Billy rounding Stubbs to score past Avramovic. County responded with a spectacular volleyed goal by Hunt but Burnley re-established superiority with Dobson magnificent and increased their lead in the 74th minute. Hamilton, Marshall Burke and Derek Scott combined to put through Cavener for his second. County substitute Christie got a late second goal in the 86th minute. Vince Overson and McCulloch for County were booked by referee Pat Partridge. Not a classic but evidence that Burnley’s fortunes are on the up.
