A Church Holds Its Final Service

A section of those who attended the final service. Included are the four Sunday school queens (centre), Guides. Brownies, children, and some of the older members.
The last service to be held at Stoneyholme Church was conducted by the Rev. E. Brian Packett on Sunday evening. Average attendance at evening service has not usually been more than 25 to 30 but ironically enough the last service was attended by about 150 adults and children. At the morning service about 120 members attended. The church is being closed because of dry rot. At the morning service Miss Pamela Fletcher played the organ. Guides and Brownies were present, along with four queens belonging to the Sunday school. Miss Barbara Dewar (senior queen), Elaine France (senior flower mission queen), Miss Wendy Francis (primary queen) and Miss Valerie Halstead (rose mission queen). The Sacrament of the Lord's Supper was observed at the close of the morning service.
Mrs F. Redman was organist at the evening service and the choirmaster was Mr C. Hooson. The choir sang the anthem, "Te Deum" and the sermon by Mr Puckett related to the problems of buildings and churches. Most of the members will be absorbed by Colne Road Methodist Church.
