Prospects are rosy after link with VG

The shop in St. Matthew’s Street, Burnley. Advertising feature written by Winifred Bose, on Burnley based food retailers, Redman’s branches in Lancashire and Yorkshire, and who joined forces with the VG buying group but who have stayed a family firm. Business is booming and in all branches the situation is rosy. Mr. Christopher Redman, son of founder Tom, said they intended to stay private but there would be benefits attached to the link with VG. Redman’s are predominantly food retailers but have several different kinds of outlets. In St. Matthew’s Street, Rosegrove, Hapton, Colne, Earby, Skipton and Morecambe they trade as Redman-VG. The shops which are mainly bacon, cooked meats and cheese trades still carry the name Redman’s only, these are Burnley Market, Nelson Market, Barnoldswick, Leeds, Halifax and Huddersfield Market Halls and Wakefield. They are trialling self service discount foods successfully in the Nelson Arndale Centre. The accent in all branches is still friendly service. Continental cheeses and foods have been added to their traditional ranges, to serve the town centre shops. They find they cannot compete on groceries with the supermarkets, but still do 100 lines packaged under their own name, such as dumpling mixes. One of their major successes is still potted salmon, not to be confused with salmon paste. Head office is at Briercliffe Mill, Harle Syke and the three directors are Christopher Redman, Chairman and M.D., Mr.P. Gunson, Secretary and Mr. J. Walton. The warehouses and offices are also there and there is a staff of about 120. Tom Redman and Co Ltd. goes back 70 years, and has always meant bacon in this area. The firm has had its ups and downs but it has not only survived but things could not be brighter.
