In one of the best games seen at Holden Road this season Calder Vale returned to the winning path with an 11-9 victory over Lancaster University in an exhibition of open play which brought thrilling runs and great defensive moves. Vale celebrated their first home match for six weeks. Play was fast and the young University side went ahead in the second minute with a drop goal. Vale found it difficult to subdue the speedy visitors and following a home infringement Lancaster went further ahead with a penalty goal. Vale began to improve and after a forward rush, P. Watson kicked ahead and followed up to reduce the lead with a try. Just before the interval the ball was heeled out to A. Baxter, who kicked ahead and followed up 40 yards to score a fine try, which S. Douglas converted. On half-time Douglas scored a penalty goal.

Both teams played great rugby after the interval with the three-quarters opening out the game, and only fine defensive play preventing scores. Lancaster obtained a penalty goal from a Vale scrum infringement. For the first occasion at Holden Road the St John Ambulance Brigade was officially represented and were on duty to deal with any casualties affecting players. For some weeks official representations had been made by the club for assistance in case of injuries, and in the past players had been taken straight to hospital. Area Superintendent G. Wootton, of Burnley, has been responsible for answering the request and on Saturday Mrs Margaret Redman was on duty in charge of some senior members of the ambulance Cadet Division.
