From a story by John Whelan, pictures by Keith Snowden:
Burnley Ballet Festival finished on a high note with Burnley girls among the trophy winners and a local dancing school, the Hilda Halliwell, of Brierfield, delighting an audience of more than 150 with a winning routine in the senior cabaret group section. The Mayor of Burnley, Alderman Desmond Parkinson and the Mayoress, Mrs Gudrun Parkinson, together presented the prizes. Welcoming them on behalf of the organisers was chairman of Burnley Festival Committee Alderman Thomas Burrows. The principal adjudicator, Miss Ivett Sargent, commented on the enthusiasm and high standards of the dancers. She complimented them for the way they had taken criticism and advice. Bouquets were presented to Miss Sargent and the Mayoress by Noreen Banks and Amanda Spillane.

Local girls in the prize-winners' line-up were Gillian Ashworth, who took the Joyce Heap and Pearl Redman trophies and Patricia Terry, joint winner of the Joan Neville trophy and first in the Burnley and District Sunday School Union trophy prize. Patricia, who is 14, of Kings Causeway, Brierfield, is also a benefactor of the festival, in addition to her dancing prowess. This year the trophy in her name was competed for a second time and won by Tracey Ellis and Julie Worden.
