Mr. Redman seated in the armchair, one of his four retirement gifts, at the works on Wednesday. Standing behind from the left are Mr. Tom Redman, founder and chairman of T. Redman and Co. Ltd. and brother of Mr. Redman, Mr. T.T. Redman Joint managing director, Mr. W. Redman joint managing director, (sons of Mr. T. Redman), and Mr. C. Nadin, secretary.

Mr. Walter Redman, of 40 Kiddrow Lane, Burnley, 65 year-old brother of Mr. Tom Redman, founder and chairman of T. Redman and Co., Ltd., grocers, retired last Saturday after 33 years as a branch inspector with the firm. Before that he had worked for 20 years with the sister firm, Redman, Ltd., of which another brother, the late Mr. Albert Redman, was the founder. Mr. Walter Redman has received no fewer than four gifts on his retirement, a barometer, a 400 day clock, an armchair and a television set. The television set was from the directors, the armchair from the secretary of the firm, Mr. C. Nadin, branch inspectors, departmental managers and branch managers, and the clock and barometer from managements and staff in the South Lancashire area where Mr. Redman has been the branch inspector. Only Mr. Redman and his brother Tom remain of the 10 sons of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Redman of Lowerhouse. Their father was an engraver for 46 years.

Mr. Walter Redman was born in Lowerhouse and at the age of 12 he began working at Lowerhouse Mill but before long had gone to work with his brother Albert, who died recently, and the newly formed firm, Redman Ltd.

In 1924 he transferred to the firm of T. Redman and Co., Ltd. and carried on the same job he had had during the last two years of his association with Redman Ltd., that of branch inspector. Mr. Redman has many interests and he will not be at a loss what to do in his retirement. He likes the gramophone, radio and of course has a new found interest in television. He is in his own words a man who likes "a bit of everything".

Mr. Redman was an early volunteer for service in the First World War. He joined the Manchester Regiment and saw much service in France and Belgium and was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in action in 1918.
