Lowerhouse Sign 'Pro' From Bradford League

This image of Arthur Vickers appeared in the Burnley Express on the 6th October 1945 with a brief statement that he had been signed as Lowerhouse 'Pro' for 1946. Of Kilnhurst, near Rotherham he was described as a fast bowler who took 61 wickets while playing with Pudsey St. Lawrence the previous season. On the 10th October more information is provided: whilst a professional at Swinton a Yorkshire Council club, he captured 70 wickets; the year previous he was at Denaby Main; in 1940-41 and 1942 he was at Rotherham; and during 1937-39 assisted Mexborough. Vickers who is 27 years of age, is regarded as a most promising bowler, and has played with Yorkshire Celts.
However a cutting from the 5th July 1946 Burnley Express reports that Lowerhouse C.C. have notified Arthur Vickers they have decided not to re-engage him for next season. He has not found his best form in his first experience of the Lancashire League and has been further handicapped by a back injury. This necessitated an X-ray but was not of a serious nature. His best performance of the season was in the last home game against Accrington, when he took four wickets for 27 runs. So far this season he has taken 24 wickets for 444 runs and scored 184 in 11 innings.
