Although Dawson Waldron, the former Empire contestant, did not appear in the second stage of the East Lancashire weightlifting championships at Lowerhouse Mills on Sunday, 18th October 1970, the middleweight class proved outstanding. There were five contending for the title up to the clean and jerk and victory went to Terry Costello (Stockport), who recently represented Great Britain in the junior international against Denmark. He went through all presses and snatches without failure and had only one miss in the permitted nine attempts. His aggregate score gave him a margin of 38 and a half lb over Albion's Jim Nuttall, who was not up to expected form. Vince Foy (Wythenshawe) won the flyweight and just failed to qualify for the 1971 British junior championships by failing twice in the jerk. Chris Mills (Manchester) won in the mid-heavies.

Although below form, Jim Nuttall retained the Bill Miller Memorial trophy for the fifth occasion. Dave Young failed a late fitness test and was unable to compete.
The awards were presented by Mr. J. Frodsham, president of Lowerhouse Mills Club, and Kevin Thorp, the Yorkshire mid-heavy champion.
