Sabden Girl Guide Company

Sabden brownies being "carried over" into the new Guide company, Left to right: Lt. Julie Graham, "Witch" Carol Walker, new Guide Helen Pickard, Guide captain Mrs. Brenda Dyer, Brownie-Guider Mrs. Margaret White, and (background) County Commissioner, Mrs. P. Thompson.

No! The Pendle witches have not returned as members of the Girl Guides! "Witch" guide Carol Walker wears the garb of these former "terrors of Pendle" to represent the new standard just adopted by the Lancashire Girl Guides - a witch flying over Pendle, with a Lancashire rose in the background. Carol is one of 10 new Guides enrolled into the new Sabden Girl Guide company by County Commissioner Mrs. P. Thompson at St. Nicholas's church hall on Tuesday, 6th October 1970.

The Guides were formed from the elder members of the Brownie pack started by Mrs. Margaret White, wife of the vicar of St. Nicholas's Church, when she and her husband came to the village last November. Mrs. White said: "The company is open to children of all denominations. My intention is to get them out and about to experience things for themselves, not merely to collect badges for the arms."

The concert organised by them after the enrolment was part of the work for their hostess badge and 24 passed with flying colours. The guides meet once a week in the County School, Sabden, and anyone interested in joining should get in touch with Mrs. White or Mrs. Brenda Dyer, the new Guide captain.
