Duke Will Give Elizabeth Her Award

Elizabeth proudly shows her gold award.

Years of hard work by 19-year-old Elizabeth Lord were finally rewarded when she heard she had won the coveted Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, and will travel down to Buckingham Palace next month to receive the award from the Duke. Elizabeth, who lives in Abel Street, is the first member of the Holy Trinity Rangers group to get the gold award. Starting as a Brownie, she has passed through the ranks to her present work with the Rangers. Elizabeth is one of the oldest of the 20 rangers, whose group was formed 12 years ago. Other members have passed the bronze and silver stages and are now working towards the gold.

Mrs. Carol Kirkbright, the Ranger leader, is full of praise for Elizabeth, a former student at Ivy Bank School. Elizabeth is now working at the Great Universal Stores, but is waiting to hear if she has passed her entrance examinations for a teacher training college. She studied for this at Burnley Municipal College. Among the courses she completed for the gold award were voluntary help for the sick, aged and disabled, camping, hiking handicraft and budgeting. Her mother, Mrs. Christine Lord, and assistant Ranger leader Mrs. H. Holsgrove, will go with Elizabeth to London in December.
