For the third successive year, Heasandford Junior school has gained the National Dolphin swimming trophy. The dolphin scheme is designed to encourage swimming in primary schools in England and Wales, and is jointly promoted by the National Water Safety Committee and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, and sponsored by the British bottlers of Coca-Cola
Headmaster, Mr J. K. Helliwell, said that the reason for Heasandford's success in the dolphin scheme is a combination of hard work, good tuition and wonderful backing. All school leavers at Heasandford for the past three years have been able to swim at least 100 yards. The Mayor of Burnley, Alderman E. J. Willis presented the awards and congratulated the children on their continued success and paid tribute to the co-operation of the school, parents, and staff of North Street Baths, who have brought it about. The trophy was received by Deborah Waddicor. The national winners' certificate was received by Beverley Simcox, divisional winners' by Neil Goodwin, award for consistent achievement by Lionel Smith, and award of distinction by Alan Jackson. The Judith Hart trophy for inter-house swimming was received on behalf of Hawk House by captain Julie Pearce. There was a special presentation of a canteen of cutlery to Mr Jack Hargreaves, manager of North Street Baths, in appreciation for all his work for the school. Female dignitaries were presented with sprays of flowers by children of the lower school and the school sang carols to the guests.
