A 10 year-old relative newcomer to the stage is to play the title role in St John's Operatic Society's next production of “Oliver".
James Cockerill, of Walverden Road, Brierfield, was chosen from almost 30 boys who auditioned for the part at the weekend.
James‘ previous theatrical experience is limited to a few school plays and although the thought of performing in a much larger, more professional musical production is somewhat daunting, James is looking forward to it.
He said this week: “Rehearsals start soon and I can hardly wait. It's going to be hard work, but at least that will stop me feeling nervous - until opening night, that is!”
Another main juvenile part in Oliver, that of Artful Dodger, was also cast this weekend. Stevan Manley (14), Barkerhouse Road, Nelson, (pictured) is something of an old hand when it comes to dramatic and musical productions. He recently played the lead in Primet High School's presentation — “The Card” and in the past has taken part in several school plays and Sunday School pantomimes.
Both boys are following in stage family footsteps. James’ sister Louise (20) also had a part in a production of “Oliver” when she was 14 and since then has gone on to become a member of a successful local group —“ Flamingo Road“
Both Stevan’s parents are members of the Freelance Society and even his younger brother Warren, aged seven, has performed in church pantomimes and this year's schools’ festival.
Mrs Vera Manley said: “We are pleased as punch that Stevan has landed this part and all his family are very proud of him.”
"Oliver" will be staged at the end of April and a further 19 boys were small parts after the auditions.
