Sandra, Jonathan and Allyson cast their spells over the cauldron.
Yellow witches, purple witches, tartan witches, cat-suited witches - they were all there at the children's Hallow-e'en fancy dress party held at Read Constitutional and Unionist Club on Friday 30th October 1970. About 25 children attended the party, which was organised by the ladies' committee in aid of the children's Christmas trip to see the pantomime "Cinderella" at Manchester Opera House.
The club had been decorated by the ladies, and the decorations featured lanterns, witches, and faces, and the children themselves had obviously made a great effort to make their costumes. There was everything from a graduation gown to a cat-suit, but first prize went to four-year-old Jonathan Godfrey of Forester Drive Fence, for his superb wizard's outfit. Second was Sandra Mashiter (8) of Whalley Road and third was Allyson Stevenson (7) of Singleton Avenue, both of Read. Judges were Mrs. M. Shaw, wife of the brewery representative, and her sister-in-law, Mrs. M. Shaw. They presented prizes of books, jigsaws and sweets to the winners. Compere for the evening was Mrs. A. Stevenson, chairman of the ladies' committee, who led the children's games. Mrs. H. Holmes and Mrs. E. Bracewell played the piano. The evening, described by Mrs. Stevenson as "a great success for the kids" realised about £5.
